🚨 Ecuador: When Direct Democracy Becomes a Weapon Against the Rule of Law As an Ecuadorian academic and thought leader specializing in rule of law and global governance, my research exposes how direct democracy mechanisms are being weaponized. Ecuador's December 2025 referendum isn't democracy—it's institutional erosion in action. The government seeks to enable political trials against the Constitutional Court (which suspended 17 security law articles for violating human rights) while branding opponents "enemies." The military-backed march outside the Court on 12 August exemplifies this judicial warfare—a direct replica of Bukele's playbook. This case sounds a global alarm: From El Salvador to India, authoritarian regimes are hijacking participatory tools to concentrate power. How do we defend institutions when ballots bury constitutional safeguards? I'll dissect this threat from the Andean frontline at the Bay of Bengal Conversation 2025. Contact: [email protected]

The strategic landscape of the 21st century has increasingly shifted toward the Indo-Pacific, bringing renewed attention to the Bay of Bengal — the largest bay in the world. As Professor Kikuchi Tsutomu of Aoyama Gakuin University and the Japan Institute of International Affairs observed, following the South China Sea, the Bay of Bengal is emerging as the next major theatre of strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific region. As a student of International Relations at the University of Dhaka, I recognize the growing geopolitical and economic significance of this region. Participating in the “Bay of Bengal Conversation” would therefore be an invaluable opportunity for me to engage with leading scholars, policymakers, and practitioners, deepen my understanding of regional dynamics, and contribute meaningfully to discussions on shaping a cooperative and secure Indo-Pacific future.
