‘Climate change is a global problem but the reality is it created by only some countries,’ said Dr. Atiq Rahman in a webinar on Thursday. The webinar was organized by the Centre for Governance Studies(CGS), supported by UNDP to release a series of a policy brief on climate change titled “Searching Ways Forward for Bangladesh in the Time of Pandemic: Climate Change and Disaster Management challenges in Bangladesh”. It was hosted by Zillur Rahman, the executive director of CGS.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Chief Executive, Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA), and Architect Mubasshar Hussain, President, Institute of Architects Bangladesh, Manjur A. Chowdhury, Chairman, CGS were the discussants in the event. 

Atiq Rahman who developed the policy brief suggests economic growth must be environmentally sound and socially just. He appreciates the efforts of the government in tackling climate change and said more funds are required to deal with the next development process regarding the issue. Dr. Manjur, the chairman in his speech raised the issue of climate injustice. He requested the foreign ministry and the diplomats to consider climate diplomacy into consideration. 

In the webinar, Mubasshar Hussain emphasized conducting comprehensive research on how people in Bangladesh have been adapting to climate change year after year. He also suggested utilizing natural resources like rainwater more profoundly. Furthermore, Syeda Rizwana Hasan mentioned the importance of developing the resilience of both systems and the people. She recommended making sure that development projects do not give pressure on the existing natural base. 

From the webinar, the issue of participatory and inclusive development was raised by everyone. Although the climate problem is the result of the activities of few countries the sufferer is everyone, said the speakers.
