Mass media plays an increasingly important role in the contemporary world. Its ubiquitous presence dictates many aspects of life. The contents, and consequent impacts, of media is inextricably linked to who controls the media. In recent years, Bangladesh on the one hand has experienced significant proliferation of various kinds of medium, including television, radio and news portals, while on the other hand, it has seen serious erosion of media freedom. Yet, media freedom or ownership in Bangladesh is not systematically and widely studied.

Center for Governance Studies (CGS) is conducting a research project since October 2019 which explores the pattern of media ownership in Bangladesh and its development since 1991, when the country embarked on a democratic era. The project will develop a baseline to help understand the principal features of the media ownership in Bangladesh. The research project is funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). Dr. Ali Riaz and Mohammad Sajjadur Rahman are leading the research team.
